It’s hard to believe that we’re already in our 3rd week of school! We’ve had one PTA meeting, and one great Dads Breakfast, and September isn’t over yet! Thank you to all who have gotten involved so far, either reaching out, attending a meeting, donating or volunteering! We couldn’t do it without you.
Our next event is our Welcome Back Chicken BBQ on Friday afternoon from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM. We still have a limited number of dinners left if you haven’t gotten your tickets yet. We also have a couple of volunteer spots, and one really big need – 2 metal trashcans with lids! We will return them to you, clean, on Saturday. Let us know if you can help!
Open House is our following event on Tuesday, September 27 from 6-8:00 PM. You will be receiving a note from Principal Amodeo in your child’s backpack. We are trying a new format, and hope that it will make it easier for parents to meet all their children’s teachers. The PTA will have a table in the Cafetorium, where you can pay your PTA dues, sign up to volunteer, ask questions, and meet other parents and members of the PTA. We will also be selling NSES car magnets for $5, for those of you who have been asking! We have published 1/2 hour intervals on our Volunteer page (or scroll down to the bottom of this post on the right sidebar). We need help manning (or womanning) the PTA table so that we can also go to our own children’s classrooms. Please consider helping for a half hour. You do not have to be extremely knowledgeable about PTA, you just need to want to help! You can even learn a little more about what PTA does, too!
Our biggest fundraiser of the year will be coming out next week. We will be selling Wooden Spoon Cookie Dough, David’s Cookie Dough (3 varieties, certified Kosher), and Butter Braid sweet and savory pastries! All will be available to sample at Open House. Order forms will be due back in mid-October for Election Day (November 8) delivery to school. This is where the PTA earns the majority of its income. We are grateful for your support, and the students really enjoy the concerts, field trips, special events, playground equipment, etc., that we have already, and continue to, purchase.
Many of you have been asking about After-School Clubs. Well, they are here and ready to start in October. We currently have 4 different clubs (6 groups) running Thursdays from October 6 through November 24. Fliers will be coming home describing the clubs, and what grades are eligible for each. All signups for clubs will be done through Eventbrite.com, 1st come, 1st served, with wait-lists. For those who do not have access to a computer, there is an Eventbrite app for your phone or tablet. We realize that this is not an ideal way for everyone to sign up, but it is the only way to keep signups fair. Registration for all clubs will start at the same time, well after you should have received your child’s flier, so you will have ample time to be informed. There will be a small registration fee for each club.
There will be 2 additional 7-week sessions of clubs to be held after the Winter Break. Preference will be given to children who did not attend a club in the first session to ensure that as many children are able to participate as possible.
We need volunteers to run the clubs! We are so lucky to have Christina Carey and Jody Kelly overseeing the clubs this year and doing the admin portion, but we need adults in the classrooms. The number of kids served and classes offered depends on you! We have kept the clubs for the first session very simple – Lego, Pokemon, Art & Crafts, etc. You do not need any special knowledge to supervise a club. If you are available from 3:30 to 5:00, and can supervise a club, please signup on our Volunteer page, or contact anyone in the PTA. Also, you may not be available, but do you have a grandparent, high school student or friend nearby that enjoys working with kids? Volunteers will need to fill out a CSDA Volunteer application. For the 2nd and 3rd sessions, we will be also looking for anyone who has a talent or interest that they would like to share. All ideas are welcome, and the kids get so much joy out of these after-school activities.
The new NSES School Beautification Committee will hold its first meeting on Wednesday, October 5th at 6 PM in the Cafetorium. Anyone who is interested in the grounds at NSES is welcome to join. The PTA will organize the first meeting, but it is hoped to be able elect co-chairs to come up with a cohesive plan for the entire school grounds. There are currently many differing opinions – natural playground, raised veggie beds, restoration of original garden, etc. We have some opportunities for grants that people are looking into as well. However, the one thing that ALL can agree on is that we want and need our school to look better. Please try to attend if you are interested!
We also have some holidays fast approaching. Monday, October 3 is Rosh Hashanah, and all district offices will be closed. The following week, Monday October 10th, all district offices are closed in observance of Columbus Day. Tuesday, October 11th is a professional development day for teachers, but no school for students. Wednesday, October 12th is Yom Kippur, and all district offices will be closed. Classes will resume on Thursday, October 13th. Please don’t forget to make your childcare arrangements!
Due to the Yom Kippur Holiday, our next PTA meeting will not be held until Wednesday, October 19th, at 6:30 PM in the Cafetorium. We had a wonderful turnout for our first two PTA meetings, and hope that you will be able to come to this one. As always, childcare will be provided. Mr. Amodeo will talk about school happenings. We will also be discussing our budget for this school year. PTA memberships can be done online. Our school code is 12-039. We still are only $5!
Thank you for reading! And thank you for all you do to give our students extra. Extra attention, extra fun, extra after-school fun, extra community, extra love.
