Happy December, all! Can’t believe that we are already at the end of another calendar year. Here are some items of note for the month and beginning of next year.
Our PTA meeting on December 14th is cancelled. Our next PTA meeting will be On January 11, 2017 at 6:30 PM in the Cafetorium. Childcare will be provided. Hope to see you there!
Mrs. Danzy, our school nurse, is once again requesting donations of cash and/or gift cards for some of our students who have the greatest need. The nurse’s office works with our school social worker and staff to identify these children and their families. Last year, thanks to the generosity of our NSES family, we were able to provide gift cards for groceries to more than 5 families. If you have other items you would prefer to donate, or wish to find out what the greatest needs are, please contact Mrs. Danzy at mdanzy@Albany.k12.ny.us or call the nurse’s office at 475-6780.
Last spring, the Albany School District adopted a new Health and Wellness Policy. The full policy is here, however, Dr. Wilkinson sent home a two-page summary clarification last week that came home in backpack mail. One of the changes is that birthdays, holiday parties, and other celebration are now food free. With the holiday season upon us, many classrooms will be planning events. Please, NO FOOD. That also includes treat bags. We will be discussing this policy more at the January PTA meeting, and we realize that it will be a difficult transition for staff, students, and teachers alike, but we hope that you will respect the policy and the spirit behind it. Thank you in advance for your help in enforcing this policy.
Coming up on January 10th, the school district will be holding a vote on two propositions to purchase a building at 395 Elk Street, and to renovate 50 North Lark. The district is currently bursting at the seams, and needs additional middle school space. The district will renovate the Lark St building to become a 3rd middle school – the only one on the north side. The Elk St building will be used to relocate the Alternative Learning Center, which is currently housed on Lark St. Please take the time to inform yourself about the projects, and get out and vote!! The district information page is here. It includes voting day information, as well as info on absentee ballots. There are two upcoming community forums on Wednesday, December 14th, from 5-6 PM at Schuyler Achievement Academy, and Monday, December 19th from 7-8 PM at Stephen & Harriet Myers Middle School. The propositions will have no impact on taxes.
Reminder: All schools and district offices will be closed for the Holiday break, beginning Saturday, December 24th, and ending January 2, 2017. Classes will resume on January 3, 2017. PAL would like us to remind you that they will be holding day camp during the break if you are in need of childcare. For more information, see the Albany PAL Facebook page, Twitter account, albanypal.org or contact Sherry Rose at PAL at 435-0392.
Please have a safe, happy and healthy holiday break. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy New Year, and we hope that any other holiday or observance that you celebrate is all that you hope and wish for. See you next year!
