Hard to believe that the first day of school is already around the corner, but we are now less than two weeks away from the first day of school! Hope that you are all enjoying these last days of summer.
It’s early yet, but Harvest Fest is right around the corner! Want to help? There will be an informational meeting at Martel’s on August 28th at 6:30 pm. Please RSVP to Jolyn Gallagher at 518.694.1237. Many hands make light work, and it will be a great opportunity to get involved.
We’ve got a very busy September coming up. We have two activities coming up before the doors even open! The Pre-k/Kindergarten Orientation is Friday, September 1, from 1:30-2:30 PM. Welcome to all the new and returning families whose children will be starting out at NSES this fall. The PTA will have a table set up outside the Kindergarten wing to introduce ourselves to you and hand out some information. Hope to see you there!
On Labor Day, Monday, September 4, we will be having our 3rd Annual Welcome Back Chalk Party. Please join us from 10:00 AM-12:00 PM and help us write out and draw Welcome Back messages for our classmates, staff, and teachers! Bring your own chalk (we will have extra) and make sure you have a water bottle and sunscreen – it gets hot out there. You will be able to inspect our new lawn out front, as well as the new parking signage for the front cutout.
Which brings us to the first day of classes! Tuesday, September 5, the doors to school open at 8:10 AM and the day begins at 9:05 AM. As mentioned above, we will have some new drop-off and pick-up procedures. You should have received your welcome letter from Principal Amodeo by now, outlining the changes that will be made to make school drop-off and pick-up run more smoothly, and most importantly, KEEP OUR KIDS SAFER! If you did not yet receive your letter, you can find it HERE: Amodeo letter.
We have a signup at http://newscotland.parentplace.info/volunteer to sign up as a Parent Volunteer for either AM or PM shifts. Parent volunteers will be helping school personnel and our beat officer, Officer Gordon McLean, with helping our traffic flow smoothly, and helping parents with drop-off and pick-up issues. Time slots are available in 30 minutes increments. If you have a flexible schedule, please consider signing up to help out. At this time, we hope to have Parent Volunteers for the first 3 weeks of school until the Rosh Hashanah break. Principal Amodeo and Officer McLean will be evaluating the situation on a daily basis and tweaking as necessary. Thank you in advance for your support of this initiative. The traffic has been an issue around the school for many years now, and the safety of the students is and should be paramount.
Friday, September 8, is the first 2017-2018 Spirit Day! Our school colors are purple and white. Show your school spirit by wearing school colors or apparel. The first Friday of every month is Spirit Day. And many students and teachers wear purple every Friday. We will again have an opportunity for you to purchase Spirit Wear this school year. More info will be available at Open House. Go Tigers!
Our first PTA meeting is Wednesday, September 13th at 6:30 PM in the Cafetorium. We will be introducing all the new officers. Mr. Amodeo will also give a welcome. Please come and out and see what PTA is all about. We can’t do it without you! Childcare will be provided. Do you have an older NSES Alum who would like to help out babysitting for the duration of the meeting? We have a sign-up for the entire year’s worth of meetings on our ParentPlace website at http://newscotland.parentplace.info/volunteer. The PTA pays babysitters a small stipend for their services. All PTA meetings are held on the 2nd Wednesday of the month, and this year, the time of all PTA meetings has been moved to 6:30 PM.
Tuesday, September 19, is the national event, Dads Take Your Children to School. NSES will host a breakfast in the gymnasium at 8:00 AM. All are welcome to join in – dad, stepdad, grandfather, brother, uncle, special neighbor, even moms! Signups for beverage donations are at on the ParentPlace website, as well as volunteer shifts for setup, cleanup, and serving. Our previous events have been a huge success and we hope to see you there.
Wednesday, September 20, is Picture Day! A bit earlier this year, but those back to school haircuts won’t be grown out yet! Send your order form in with your child (cash, or check payable to NSES PTA), or order online at Lifetouch.com. Our Picture ID is AD087710Q0. And never fear, we will have a picture retake day in November.
Just like that, we arrive at our first two days off – Thursday and Friday, September 21 and 22, for Rosh Hashanah, and a Teacher Professional Development Day, respectively. L’Shana Tova to our NSES family who celebrate!
The Albany Booster Club 3rd Annual Falcon 5K and Family Fun Run will be held on Sunday, September 24th, in Washington Park. This fun event features a 5K kicking off at 9:30 AM, and a kids 1 mile Fun Run at 10:30 AM. There are activities for kids, and many of our AHS Falcon Student Athletes compete in the 5K, along with our Albany teachers, staff, community members, elected officials, and more! It’s a very fun time and a great community builder. Make up a team or run alone, but you will see many people you know, and many that you don’t! Register HERE. Wear your NSES purple and bring your Tiger Pride!
We will round out September with our Open House Night, September 26 at 6:00 PM. More details will come home during the first few weeks of school. This is a great opportunity to meet your child(ren)’s teachers and other members of the NSES community. Hope to see you there!
Please make sure that you are signed up at ParentPlace for our email blasts. We also have a Facebook page, Twitter and Instagram accounts. We can be reached through all of these venues, as well as at firstname.lastname@example.org. Also, please head to www.albanyschools.org and sign up for SNN, the School News Notifier. Many important announcements come out over SNN, including school closings and delays, and any other emergency notifications.
Here is a preview of the September PTA calendar that will go home the first day of school: September 2017
We’re looking forward to a great year!
